Andriy Razumovsky, son of Kyrylo Razumovsky, the last hetman of Left-Bank Ukraine, was a diplomat, patron of the arts, and passionate music lover. In Vienna, he became friends with Ludwig van Beethoven and supported his work.

Beethoven dedicated three string quartets, Op. 59, to Andriy Razumovsky. Today, they are known as the “Razumovsky Quartets.” These works feature Ukrainian folk melodies.

Palais Ferstel was built between 1856 and 1860 for the Austrian National Bank and the Vienna Stock Exchange. Later, the famous Café Central opened here, becoming one of the main meeting places for Vienna’s intellectuals. Ukrainian intellectuals—including Ivan Franko, Lesya Ukrainka, Olena Pchilka, and Mykhailo Drahomanov—discussed cultural and political affairs at its tables.

In 2020, this place’s Ukrainian history took on a new resonance: Palais Ferstel hosted the fifth Ukrainian Charity Ball, combining Viennese ballroom traditions with Ukrainian culture. Around 800 guests danced the waltz to Ukrainian songs, listened to folk melodies in contemporary arrangements and performances by Ukrainian artists, while embroidered dresses and Ukrainian décor completed the atmosphere.

After a five-year break, the Ukrainian Ball returned to Palais Ferstel in 2025.

In 1980, the choir of Vienna’s Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church of St. Barbara was invited to the Hofburg residence of Austrian President Rudolf Kirchschläger. The ensemble was conducted by Ukrainian composer, educator, and longtime choir director Andriy Hnatyshyn (1906–1995), a native of the Lviv region who devoted more than 60 years to developing Ukrainian musical life in Vienna.

Almost half a century later, Ukrainian music once again rang out within these walls. In February 2026 for the first time, the grand halls of the Hofburg hosted the 7th Ukrainian Charity Ball in Vienna, bringing together more than 1,500 guests from Austria, Ukraine, and other countries around the world.

On January 17, 1921, the Ukrainian Free University was founded at Palais Eschenbach—the first Ukrainian institution of higher education outside Ukraine. Its first rector was literary scholar and public figure Oleksandr Kolessa, brother of Filaret Kolessa, one of the founders of Ukrainian ethnomusicology.

In 1997, the first Ukrainian Ball was held here—a charity event in aid of the victims of the Chornobyl disaster. Exactly 20 years later, the Ukrainian Ball tradition returned to these halls, bringing Ukrainian culture together with the traditions of the classical Viennese ball.

Ira Malaniuk was a Ukrainian opera singer from Stanislaviv, today’s Ivano-Frankivsk, who conquered Europe’s leading stages. 

From 1956 through the 1970s, she was a soloist at the Vienna State Opera. Malaniuk performed 212 times on Austria’s leading opera stage and made another 270 appearances at the Vienna Volksoper. In 1973, she received the honorary title Kammersängerin, awarded in Austria to outstanding opera singers.

The histories of outstanding Ukrainian musicians intersected in the Brahms Hall of the Vienna Musikverein. The Choir of St. Barbara’s Church, conducted by composer Andriy Hnatyshyn, performed here together with opera star Ira Malaniuk.

And in the famous Golden Hall, Ukrainian conductor Oksana Lyniv made her debut in 2017 at the helm of the Graz Philharmonic Orchestra. She is also co-founder of the LvivMozArt festival, created around the musical legacy of Franz Xaver Mozart. Thus, two centuries later, Franz Xaver’s musical history continues to unite Ukraine and Austria.

In 1919, the first Vienna concert of Oleksandr Koshyts’s Ukrainian Republican Cappella took place at the Wiener Konzerthaus. Created on the initiative of Symon Petliura, it introduced Europe to Ukraine through music. Its repertoire included Mykola Leontovych’s “Shchedryk”—the future worldwide hit “Carol of the Bells.” The Austrian tour was a tremendous success.

In 2024, Ukrainian music once again rang out loudly at the Wiener Konzerthaus. At one of Vienna’s most renowned arts festivals, Oksana Lyniv brought together more than 150 Ukrainian musicians, who presented an entirely Ukrainian programme.

The Academic Gymnasium is Vienna’s oldest school, with a history dating back to 1553. The current Neo-Gothic building was constructed between 1863 and 1866 to designs by Friedrich von Schmidt, the future architect of Vienna City Hall. Over the years, many prominent figures studied here, including Franz Schubert and Otto Wagner.

Since the 2017/18 academic year, these halls have also been home to the Ukrainian Saturday School in Vienna. The school began in 2010 with 16 pupils and five classes and later grew into a major Ukrainian educational center. Students learn Ukrainian and Ukrainian studies, draw, dance, and study music.

Since 1775, St. Barbara’s Church has been an important center of Ukrainian life in Vienna. The Barbareum operated here as an educational institution for the training of Greek Catholic clergy, and the renowned physicist Ivan Pului studied there.

In the 20th century, the Choir of St. Barbara, under the direction of Andriy Hnatyshyn, became one of Europe’s best-known Ukrainian choirs. Over the years of their collaboration, they recorded around 300 works of Ukrainian sacred and secular music, which were published in Austria, the United States, and the Vatican and broadcast on radio.

Ukrainian life is still vibrant here today: church services, meetings, and charitable initiatives take place here, while the “Barbareum” has become a venue for cultural events, concerts, and activities organized by Ukrainian organizations.

In Lviv, Franz Xaver became a prominent figure in the city’s cultural life, and the music society he founded laid the foundations for Lviv’s philharmonic tradition. The international LvivMozArt festival was established in honor of Mozart’s younger son. To mark the composer’s 230th anniversary, the world’s first monument to Franz Xaver appeared on Malaniuk Square—a symbolic work by Austrian sculptor Sebastian Schweikert. 

The enormous Baroque wig symbolizes his father’s fame, which weighed on Xaver throughout his life, while the absence of a pedestal places him on an equal level with the people of Lviv, among whom he spent a significant part of his life.
